A brief history and background of the language
Korean in writing uses Hangeul letters. In ancient times, before Hangeul was created, Korean people used Chinese characters (or also called Hanja). However, some people, especially the lower class at that time, felt that Hanja was very difficult to learn. Because of this, illiteracy was rampant in Korea. In addition, Hanja is also considered inappropriate in representing the Korean language. In the past, Korean people used Korean orally, while in writing they used Chinese characters. You can imagine how difficult it is to apply its own language with foreign letters?
Finally, on October 9, 1443, King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty created a new writing system that was easier to understand. Well, this writing is called Hangeul. There are 24 Hangul letters consisting of 14 consonants and 10 vowels. When it was first created, there were 28 Hangeul letters consisting of 17 consonants and 11 vowels. But finally, 3 consonants and 1 vowel are removed. Until now, October 9 was designated as Hangul Day in Korea. Of the 6000 languages that exist in the world, there are only 100 languages that have their own script. Korean language that uses Hangul letters is one of them.
