A brief history and background of the language
As mentioned earlier, Italian evolved from Latin. It is believed that it was mostly the language of masses or less educated citizen of ancient Rome. Many words and terms spoken in contemporary Italian have been directly taken from Latin some 2000 years ago and have continued to evolve in the modern times. It went through a significant cultural, political, social and economic transformation after the unification of Italy in 1961. Before the unification of Italy, 77% of the population was considered illiterate and could only speak in their respective dialects. Only 3% were found to be speaking standard Italian but all that changed after 2nd world-war because of the growing influence and use of Radio, TV and Newspapers that enhanced the literacy percentage. Presently the standard form is spoken by more than 90% of the native population of Italy and has earned the status of one of the most studied foreign languages in the world.Poets like Dante and Petrarca’s works gave a prestigious literary work to the language. The language has been made popular because of these poets.
