A brief history and background of English language
English is a language of West Germanic origin just like others such as German or Dutch, however, due to the history of this country, it has endless peculiarities. The reason why the origin and history of the English language shares roots with other languages of northern Europe are the invasions suffered by the original British by barbarian peoples from this part of the continent, especially by the Anglo and Saxon peoples.
During the 8th and 9th centuries several Scandinavian peoples arrived on the current island of Great Britain, decisively influencing the course of the evolution of the Anglo-Saxon dialect, in addition, in the year 1066 the Normans with William the Conqueror at the head invaded the islands introducing the influence of French also in a decisive way, in addition to other Romance languages of Latin origin. As in the rest of Europe, the Renaissance brought a return to classical Latin and Greek, introducing more new concepts until then.
Proto-English and Old English
The true origin of English is the language introduced by the Germanic barbarian tribes after the Roman invasions. Angles, Saxons, Frisians and Jutes came west imposing their language on the original peoples of the British Isles, the Brittonic language was replaced, although the original Celtic languages survived in Wales, Scotland and the Southwest. In reality, Old English is basically identified with the original language of the Anglo-Saxons, from which modern English has developed.
Middle and Modern English
In the year 1066 the Normans conquered England, putting an end to the Anglo-Saxon language supremacy, and introducing an influence that would be decisive, first of the Norman language and then of French. It is true that the citizens spoke the old Anglo-Saxon language, however the court formed a kind of dialect of its own, a mixture of English and French. As a result, using Gallicisms is still considered somewhat more formal than using the original Anglo-Saxon words.
During the fifteenth century modern English originated, especially due to vowel evolution, using the London dialect as a model. In 1604 the first English dictionary was printed. During the 16th century the language accepted all kinds of classical terms related to ancient Greek and Latin.
