A brief history and background of English language

English is a language of West Germanic origin just like others such as German or Dutch, however, due to the history of this country, it has endless peculiarities. The reason why the origin and history of the English language shares roots with other languages of northern Europe are the invasions suffered by the original British by barbarian peoples from this part of the continent, especially by the Anglo and Saxon peoples.

Proto-English and Old English

The true origin of English is the language introduced by the Germanic barbarian tribes after the Roman invasions. Middle and Modern English

It is true that the citizens spoke the old Anglo-Saxon language, however the court formed a kind of dialect of its own, a mixture of English and French. As a result, using Gallicisms is still considered somewhat more formal than using the original Anglo-Saxon words.

During the fifteenth century modern English originated, especially due to vowel evolution, using the London dialect as a model. In 1604 the first English dictionary was printed. During the 16th century the language accepted all kinds of classical terms related to ancient Greek and Latin.
