A brief history and background of the language
English is a language of extraordinary linguistic richness, which owes its origins to the diversity of influences it has assimilated. Throughout history, in the fifth century BC, the inhabitants of Brittany spoke a Celtic language. However, at that time, Britain was invaded by three Germanic tribes called Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. These peoples pushed the native Celts to the extreme north and west of the country. The Angles communicated in “Englisc”, a word from which the term “English” derives. These three tribes spoke languages very similar to each other, and these were developed into Old English.
In 1066, England was conquered by William, the Duke of Normandy. He and the Normans brought French with them to the conquered land in such a way that French evolved into the language of the court and higher social classes. While English was dominant until the 14th century, many French words later became part of the New English of the Middle period.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, a crucial change began in English language. The English vocabulary grew and the pronunciation of the vowels became shortened. The Renaissance, and the learning of the classics that this involved, introduced many words from Latin, while the invention of the printing press standardized spelling and grammar, creating the new Modern English.
In the 19th century, the British Empire experienced the peak of its power and as its influence spread throughout the globe, the vocabulary of the English language also expanded as it took on words from native languages as far away as those from India, Australia and West Africa. All of this made up Modern English.
Currently, the United States dominates film, television, pop music, and technology, so American English has a great influence on the English language.
