A brief history and background of the English language

English is most popular language today. It is spoken by above 1.35 billion people and the number of speakers are constantly increasing each passing year.

The United States, where English is the official language, is home to the world’s largest internet business and tech cities, so English is also, unofficially perhaps, the language of the web. Many would argue that it is also the language of capitalism, a concept that itself grew out of a dialogue between American and English economic philosophies.

But enough of English today – what about its roots? Where does the English language come from? Let’s go back in time to recall some surprising facts and figures about the English language and its long past.

In general, the history of the English language is divided into three sections: Old English, Middle English, and Modern English.

While linguists and scholars hotly dispute these terms, and exactly when or how each period begins, a noticeable change in the language is observed during these three phases.

The first phase – Old English

Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, was a deeply Germanic language brought by tribes that began migrating to the British Isles from Germany in the 5th century AD. Old English still retains some short words that we can recognize today (him; he – and their derivatives), but the construction of more complex phrases and vocabulary requires more attention.

The Second Phase – Middle English

Middle English is so called because the Anglo-Saxon rules are systematically broken down and compromised by the various influences of the Viking invasions, the Norman conquest (1066) and of course Latin, which was the language of the church. We begin to find a greater influence of the Romance languages of continental Europe and a change in the sound of the language.

The Third Phase – Modern English

Modern English is considered to have begun in the 16th century and extends to the present day. It is characterized by the ‘Great Vowel Shift’, which, aided by the invention of the printing press and the increasing technology of widespread communication (on paper and later via radio) led to a lengthening and adjustment of sounds of vowels and a standardization of the spoken language.
